Scholarships and Bursaries

Bursaries and Scholarships available to all candidates at 11+
The School seeks to promote entry from pupils of all social backgrounds who meet the School’s entrance criteria and also seeks to support the School’s aim of widening access via the Trust’s bursary programme.

Bursaries
The School bursary programme seeks to promote entry from pupils of all social backgrounds. Bursaries are available and are awarded on the basis of financial need. Parents who wish to apply for a bursary are asked to contact the Bursar before the spring term of their child’s year of entry. All completed bursary applications must be returned to the Bursar by the end of January of the year of entry. Typically, bursaries will be in the range of 5 to 45% against the tuition portion of the fees but each application will be judged on its own merit and higher amounts may be available. All applications must be supported by the submission of financial details which will be held in confidence and all bursaries will be reviewed annually in February.

Academic Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded based on the result of the entrance examinations held in January. Up to five academic scholarships are awarded throughout the School each year.

Music and Choral Scholarships
The Governors award up to three music scholarships throughout the School each year. Music scholarships are awarded on assessment of musical ability and potential. All applicants must have achieved a satisfactory level of achievement in the entrance examination. Applicants should be ‘capable’ musicians who have achieved at least
Grade 4 in their first instrument. Music scholarship auditions will be held after the senior school entrance examinations.

Choral scholarships are available to boys and girls who are members of the Choir at Derby Cathedral. Applicants are requested to contact the Master of Music at the Cathedral for details.

Sports Scholarships
The Governors award up to three sports scholarships throughout the School each year. The scholarships are awarded on assessment of sporting ability and potential. All applicants must have achieved a satisfactory level of achievement in the entrance examination prior to doing a sports scholarship trial. A reference is required from a coach in at least one of the School’s major team games: rugby, hockey and cricket. Sports scholarship trials will be held after the senior school entrance examinations.

All Scholarships reflect a pupil’s ability and excellence and will normally remain with the recipient throughout their time in School. All scholarships are subject to periodic review by the Headmaster in the light of the performance of the pupil.
