Sixth Form Scholarships and Bursaries

Bursaries and Scholarships are available at 16+ for internal and external candidates

Academic Year 2016/2017

The School seeks to promote entry into the Sixth Form from pupils of all social backgrounds who meet the School’s entrance criteria and also seeks to support the School’s aim of widening access via the Trust’s bursary programme. The School is delighted that the Trustees have agreed to provide a limited number of academic Trust Bursaries worth up to 100% off tuition fees.

Academic Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to those pupils, girls and boys, who have demonstrated excellence in their academic work. Candidates will be expected to have an A* grade (grade 8 /9 from 2018) in all of their GCSE subjects. All students who gain A* (grade 8/9 after 2018) in all the GCSEs they take will be awarded the status of Scholar. This will entail recording their name on the School’s Honours’ Board and will be acknowledged in any academic references.

Special 100% Academic Trust Bursaries
The School is pleased that the Trustees have agreed to provide a limited number of Trust Bursaries, currently up to five annually, which are available for entry to the School at Year 12. The award of up to 100% against the tuition portion of the fee will be awarded to those candidates who gain a minimum of 9 A* grades (grade 8/9 from 2018) at GCSE and whose financial need can also be assessed by completion of the school bursary form.

Music and Choral Scholarships
The Governors award up to three music scholarships throughout the School each year. Music scholarships are awarded on assessment of musical ability and potential. Applicants should be ‘capable’ musicians who have achieved at least Grade 8 in their first instrument. Music scholarship auditions will be held in February of the year of entry.

Choral scholarships are available to boys and girls who are members of the Choir at Derby Cathedral. Applicants are requested to contact the Master of Music at the Cathedral for details.

Sports Scholarships
The Governors award up to three sports scholarships throughout the School each year. The scholarships are awarded on assessment of sporting ability and potential. A reference is required from a coach in at least one of the School’s major team games: rugby, hockey and cricket. Sports scholarship trials will be held in February of the year of entry.

All Scholarships
All Scholarships reflect a pupil’s ability and excellence and will normally remain with the recipient throughout their time in School. All scholarships are subject to periodic review by the Headmaster in the light of the performance of the pupil.

Bursaries
Bursaries are available and are awarded on the basis of financial need. Parents who wish to apply for a bursary are asked to contact the Bursar in the Autumn Term or in the early part of the Spring Term. All bursary applications are reviewed in February.

Typically, bursaries will be in the range of 5 to 45% against the tuition portion of the fee but each application will be judged on its own merit and higher amounts may be available. All applications must be supported by the submission of financial details which will be held in confidence and all bursaries will be reviewed annually in February.
