Music plays an important role in the extra-curricular life of the School in addition to being a popular subject on the curriculum. There are a wide range of instrumental and choral ensembles that pupils in the Junior School and Senior School can join. Pupils regularly give concerts in School and various musicals have included ‘Grease’ and ‘Footloose’. The Department organises visits out of School to concerts and there are opportunities to participate in workshops (for example run by Glyndebourne Opera). Several groups have often entered regional and national competitions (for example the National Festival of Music for Youth). The Music Department has a strong relationship with Derby High School, allowing boys and girls to form joint ensembles. Concerts are regularly performed in Derby Cathedral and there are several choral scholars at the School. The department also has a strong association with Hot House (formerly the East Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra) with many pupils being involved in a number of their ensembles which rehearse conveniently on site. Several pupils have gone on to study music at top universities and music colleges around the country.

Choral Music  Singing is an important part of musical life at Derby Grammar School. The Junior School is involved in the national Sing Up scheme and the Senior School actively encourages singing, involving both pupils and staff taking part in events.

Junior Choir  Open to any pupil, the Junior Choir takes part in a variety of concerts throughout the year, culminating in competing in the Derby Arts Festival in the summer term.

Senior Choir  The Senior Choir rehearse in 4 parts (SATB) and performs a wide range of music including pop, jazz, classical and world styles. A variety of concerts are given both in and out of School, including performances at Derby Cathedral.

Joint Choral Society  This consists of approximately 100 singers made up of pupils, parents and staff from both the Grammar School and Derby High School. Well known choral works such as Faure’s Requiem and Rutter’s  Gloria are rehearsed over half a term and performed usually in Derby Cathedral, alongside a professional orchestra and soloists.

Instrumental Music  A variety of instrumental ensembles are available to enable all levels of musical ability to be included in extra-curricular music making at the School.

Junior Band  Open to any instrument at any level, the Junior Band takes part in a variety of concerts throughout the year.

Senior Band  This band rehearses weekly and takes part in a range of concerts both in and out of School. It is open to any instrument of any level.

Swing Band  The Swing Band is open to players of approximately Grade 4 and above. As well as taking part in our regular concerts, the Swing Band is often booked for weddings and parties and recently took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth. They have also recorded 2 CD’s.

Chamber Music  Students are encouraged to form their own ensembles and can book rehearsal time and space in the department both at lunchtime and after School. Past ensembles have included a successful jazz quartet and pop band.
