Derby Grammar School sixth formers, Will Keywood and Tom Eley, have taken part in the Lessons in Auschwitz project run by the Holocaust Educational Trust.
The course explores the lessons of the Holocaust and its relevance for today. It aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust for young people, clearly highlighting what can happen if prejudice and racism become acceptable.
Throughout the project Will and Tom heard from a Holocaust survivor to learn about pre-war Jewish life, and also visited Poland and the notorious death-camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau.
On returning they have reflected on their experiences and created an article each to capture their thoughts and disseminate what they have learnt to their fellow students and the wider community. Will’s article details Jewish history in Poland, whilst Tom’s captures his experience and reflections on the visit to the death-camps.
