Derby Grammar School pupil, Ben Mandale, 17, has raised £1200 towards his charity trip to Tanzania by playing a 72-hole golf marathon at Kedleston Golf Club on Friday 2 June with his dad, Craig.

Ben is travelling to Tanzania this July on Derby Grammar School’s long-standing project to support Gedeli B School in Mwanza.

The day started on the first tee at 6.45am and finished 400 shots and over 22 miles later.

Ben said: ‘we did the first two rounds in just three hours, but the second two rounds were a lot slower!

It’s certainly taught me a lot about fundraising, and that it’s hard beyond friends and family. A quirkier fundraising activity will achieve much more attention and interest.’

This is the fifth year of Derby Grammar School’s support of Gedeli B School. Fundraising activities by pupils have enabled the building of two toilet blocks, two classrooms and a special needs classroom, as well as the installation of electricty and water, and the supply of resources including desks, chairs and exercise books. Over £65,000 has been raised so far.

Derby Grammar School Lower Sixth pupils travel each July to Tanzania to get involved in the building activities and also to prepare and deliver lessons to the children at the school. This year the Tanzania Project team are focusing on creating a football field and building another classroom.
