Chris Davey is walking a non-stop gruelling 40 mile route to raise money towards his charity trip to Tanzania this summer with Derby Grammar School.

Starting at 8pm on Friday 16 June at Osmotherly on the western edge of the North York Moors, Chris is following the Lyke Wake Walk across the Moors. Walking with dad, Jonathan Davey, they plan to finish 40 miles later at 4pm the following day on the coast at Ravenscar.

In total it’s an 18 hour walk with no sleeping, just walking – and with no support party they will be carrying all of their own provisions.

It promises to be challenging. The combined ascents throughout the walk total a climb higher than Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles.  He is hoping it will help him to reach his fundraising total of £1500.

Chris is raising money to travel to Gedeli B School in Tanzania. Derby Grammar School has supported the school through fundraising and practical help for the last five years. Every July sixth form pupils travel to Tanzania to work on development projects and teach the pupils.

To date over £65,000 has been raised which has built two toilet blocks, two classrooms and a special needs classroom. Funds have also enabled the installation of electricity and water, as well as the purchase of resources including desks, chairs and exercise books. This summer the team are focusing on creating a football field and another classroom.

Chris said: “I’ve been a Derby Grammar School pupil since Year 3 and have always wanted to take part in the Tanzania project when I eventually reached sixth form. It will be a real life-changing experience.

I can’t say I’m completely looking forward to the Lyke Wake walk, but it’s in such a good cause, and it makes such a difference to the lives of the Gedeli children, that I will definitely finish it.”

At the end of the teaching and building period at Gedeli B School, Grammar School pupils have the choice to join a safari on the Tanzanian plains or to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Chris will be climbing Kilmanjaro and is treating his fundraising walk as good practice!
