Derby Grammar Junior School have unveiled their Buddy Bench which is now proudly situated in the Quad playground.

School Council play an important role in Junior School and last year’s Council decided they would like to introduce a Buddy Bench.

A Buddy Bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster new friendships on the playground. If any pupil is feeling a lonely they can sit on the bench and other Junior School pupils will take notice and include them in their games.

The School Council ran a competition amongst the pupils to create a design for the bench. The winning design was then painted on the bench over the summer by our Head of Creative Arts, Ms Sellors.

Mrs Sly, Head of Junior School, said: “I am so impressed by the School Council. They came up with this idea all on their own and have carried it through so we now have a wonderfully bright and cheerful Buddy Bench on the playground. Not only that, our boys also understand its purpose and what it is used for. It promotes a positive, caring attitude – and that is what is at the heart of our Junior School.”

The bench was unveiled at assembly last week. It carries the line ‘Always Room for One More Friend’.
