Charities Week is an annual event at Derby Grammar School. It is organised by the pupils and the whole school takes part, from Year 3 to Sixth Form. We come together to raise money for Gedeli B School in Tanzania.
We have worked with Gedeli School since 2013, raising money to support building and improvement projects for schoolchildren in this impoverished part of Tanzania. Every July, Sixth Form pupils travel to the school to work on development projects and teach the pupils.
To date over £71,000 has been raised which has built two toilet blocks, three classrooms and a special needs classroom. Funds have also enabled the installation of electricity and water, as well as the purchase of resources including desks, chairs and exercise books.
Charities Week this year is focusing on raising money to install a new water tower at the school to ensure the children continue to have clean water to drink. We are also hoping to build a further classroom to help reduce class sizes which can currently be over 150!
Our target to raise over the year is at least £8000. We are hoping that our Charities Week activities go a good way to raising this amount.
It promises to be a busy week, with activities ranging from Jenga competitions, cakes sales and the cross bar challenge, through to eating and lip sync competitions and the Junior School skipping competition. The activities culminate in the Snow White pantomime on Friday and Saturday evenings.
