Derby Grammar School’s latest project for Gedeli B School in Mwanza, Tanzania, has now been completed, and the pupils are overjoyed with the results!

When we first started working with Gedeli B School the grounds were rocky, uneven and covered in trees and shrubs. It certainly wasn’t an area where the 1300 pupils could play and compete in team games.

One of our 2017 projects was to level this area in order to create a space for games like football, netball and volleyball.

We are delighted to announce that this project has now been completed. £2000 has been invested to create the play area. Vicky Charnock, one of our Tanzania lead teachers, said: “we are thrilled this project has now been finished. The pupils benefit so much from a safe environment where they can have fun playing sport, and compete in teams against one another, and against other schools.”

Fundraising for our 2018 Tanzania project has already begun. Last weekend our Sixth Formers were bag packing at Tesco in Mickleover to help raise money fund their tip. They raised a staggering £2700 between them.

Today (Monday) sees the start of Charities Week at Derby Grammar School where all pupils, and most of the staff, are taking part in fundraising activities to raise money for Gedeli B School. In 2018 we are hoping to build another water tower to allow the children to have constant access to clean water. We would also like to have the funds to build another classroom as Gedeli B still has class sizes of up to 159 pupils!
