Derby Grammar School pupil, Ben Masterson, is celebrating having passed his Grade 8 trumpet examination with merit, a remarkable achievement for a 13 year-old.
Ben, from Duffield, is a music scholar at Derby Grammar School and has been playing the trumpet since the age of 7. Alongside his studies he is a member of the school’s Swing Band and Senior Band. Outside of school he plays trumpet in ‘Screaming Kicks’, and is a member of the Hot House Jazz Academy. He takes trumpet lessons with Jon Eno of Hot House music.
He said: “I first took up the trumpet when my parents wanted me to learn an instrument. The trumpet seemed the most exciting. Since then I’ve also started playing the drums and I’m currently getting ready for my grade 5.
I enjoy performing, especially the instrumental pieces, but it’s also fun performing with a singer. I used to get nervous before performances, but I don’t any more.
I spent a lot of time practising before my grade 8 exam, at home and at my trumpet lessons. I’m really pleased that I passed.”
Ben regularly performs at concerts in and around Derbyshire, as well as at Derby Grammar School productions such as the recent Snow White pantomime. He also plays the Last Post at the school’s remembrance day service each year.
In May, Ben will be joining other Derby Grammar School choir and band members as they travel to Guernsey Grammar School to take part in a weekend of joint workshops and concerts.
Mr Coley, Head of Music at Derby Grammar School, said: “I am so proud of Ben’s achievement. He is a hard-working pupil and dedicated to his music study and practice, which shows in this outstanding achievement.
He is a valued member of the school band and with all of his talent, I will be following his musical career very closely!”
Later this year Ben will also be travelling the USA with Hot House Music for their Coast to Coast tour where he will be learning and performing with leading musicians.
