Tug of War is one of the most coveted competitions in Derby Grammar Junior School. This year it has received a welcome boost from Smith Cooper, a leading Midlands firm of accountants and business advisors.

Every September the four Houses of Junior School compete for the Tug of War crown at the House competition. It is held at Rykneld Sports Centre, Derby Grammar School’s new sports facility based in Mackworth.

Although hotly contested, before now the winners have never been able to proudly hold aloft a winner’s trophy, simply because there wasn’t one. That is until Smith Cooper stepped in to the breach and agreed to sponsor the Tug of War Cup.

The tie up between the School and Smith Cooper is especially relevant as Smith Cooper’s Derby office is based in St Helen’s House, the premises of the old Derby School, out of which Derby Grammar School was formed back in 1995.

James Delve, Partner at Smith Cooper said: “We are delighted to be able to present the Smith Cooper Cup for Tug of War to Derby Grammar School, and this year to Roj Lalo, Captain of Atkinson House who are this year’s winners.

We are always keen to get involved with our local community, and what better way than to sponsor this trophy for Tug of War? It is the epitome of a team contest and, arguably, one of the most ancient games known to man.”
