Tomás Dickens has certainly made the most of the sporting opportunities opened up to him by Derby Grammar School. At the age of just 11 he is already a member of local and county sides in his favourite sports of rugby and cricket, and has just been recruited to the U13 Derbyshire Hockey squad.

Tomás, of Derby, was already a keen rugby player when he joined the school in Year 3. During his first year he was also introduced to hockey and cricket, which ignited a passion for both.

At the age of 8 he joined Belper Hockey Club and has played in different teams throughout his time with them, most recently the Under 12s. It was the Belper club who put him forward for the Derbyshire trails, and on Sunday he took part in his first training session for the Under 13 squad which comprises 22 players from across Derbyshire.

A keen cricketer, this summer Tomás was also part of the Derbyshire Under 11 Boys County Cricket Squad.

He said: “I really enjoy all of my sports. In hockey I play up front, usually as a winger. I love playing, being part of a team and doing well. I am hoping to become a professional sportsman in the future.”

As well as representing his clubs, Tomas is a key part of the Derby Grammar School sports teams. Jamie Smyth, Head of Junior School PE, said: “Tomás has been a joy to teach throughout Junior School. He has a tremendous amount of energy, passion and enthusiasm for sport at school and has developed into a real leader here at DGS. I am sure this will carry on as he continues in to Senior School here at Derby Grammar School.”
