We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Townshend who joins us in September as our new Head of Science.
Ms Townshend grew up in Nottinghamshire, and having completed her degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge, did her PGCE in London before returning to the East Midlands. The majority of her teaching career has been spent at West Bridgeford School teaching chemistry, and latterly as the Head of Chemistry.
At Derby Grammar School Ms Townshend will be teaching chemistry to all year groups, including GCSE and A Level, as well as leading the science department as a whole.
Ms Townshend said: “I am really looking forward to starting my new role. I was initially attracted to the post because of the combination of the small size of the school, which will allow me to quickly get to know every pupil, and the school’s excellent reputation for combining its nurturing approach with academic excellence.
As the mother of two energetic young boys myself I am very familiar with the joys (and challenges!) of raising boys and getting the best out of them.
Science is already a huge strength of Derby Grammar School so my ambition as Head of Science is to build on this as much as possible. This includes ensuring we are using the most up-to-date technology both inside and outside the classroom; increasing the opportunities for pupils to take part in external science competitions and awards even further; and to take advantage of the incredibly strong science-based industries in the local area to build further links to enrich pupils’ experiences and ambitions.”
She added: “I’m very excited about meeting the pupils at DGS and I’m looking forward to working not only with the science staff, who are clearly a team of enthusiastic, hard-working and highly professional teachers and technicians, but also with the wider staff and being part of the life of the school outside of science lessons.”
