The 2019/20 academic year got off to a flying start with the first House competition of the year, Cross Country and Tug of War, taking place at Derby Grammar School’s sports venue, Rykneld Sports Centre.
All pupils took part, including our youngest pupils who have joined the new Infant School this year. House Captains had their work cut out motivating and inspiring their teams to give every ounce of effort they could.
Parents, teachers and housemates cheered on all competitors from the sidelines, and the PTA kept everyone fed and watered with drinks, breakfast rolls and croissants all morning.
Atkinson won the Primary School Cross Country competition and Bemrose won the Senior School competition. In Tug of War, Bemrose won the Primary School competition and Derby won in Senior School.
Derby Grammar School’s Head, Dr Ruth Norris, said: “I’ve been looking forward to the first week of term where we can celebrate our pupils in Speech Night which took place on Thursday, and then gather in the playing fields of Rykneld Sports Centre to cheer on our boys and girls taking part in the competition.
It’s a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to form new friendships with classmates and housemates, and with the beautiful weather this morning it’s lovely for parents and staff to catch up with one another after the summer break. It is fantastic to see so many people here, a perfect start to the new school year.”
