Prospective parents and students will still be able to tour Derby Grammar School ahead of entry in
September by attending its first ever virtual open day.
The school’s only weekday Open Morning was due to take place next month (June) but staff have
had to rethink the arrangements with the current restrictions around the Coronavirus pandemic in
Parents are now being asked to book onto an online event which will take place on June 10th at
They will then be sent a link which will give them access to a pre-recorded virtual tour of the school
and facilities, including the main school site and Rykneld Sports Centre.
They will hear from key members of staff and one of the school’s governors will talk about the
quality of education on offer and give a view as an ex-parent. These talks will be pre-recorded.
Head teacher, Dr Ruth Norris, will hold a live chat to discuss why parents should choose Derby
Grammar School, the admissions process, fees and the scholarships that are on offer. She will also
talk about the new primary building that is being constructed at the school, in Littleover.
Guests will have the opportunity to take part in a live question and answer webinar-style session
with Dr Norris and the Head of Primary School, April Sly. Also taking part will be the Senior
Leadership Team including; Head of Pastoral Care, Deputy Heads, Head of Sixth Form, Bursar,
Director of Co-Curricular and Admissions. Parents will be able to type questions and the school team
will read and respond during the live chat.
Dr Norris said the school had acted quickly to adapt its open morning.
She said: “We are excited to be hosting our first Virtual Open Day at Derby Grammar School in June.
Prospective families will have the opportunity to explore our beautiful campus and extensive
facilities, meet key staff and ask live questions from home.
“There will be a welcome from the Head, talks on school life, academic excellence, pastoral
provision, sport and enrichment as well as information on admissions, bursaries and scholarships.
“The Coronavirus has presented significant challenges to ordinary life, but we have met this head on,
adapted and overcome.
“There is so much going on at Derby Grammar School despite the lockdown, we’re delighted to have
the opportunity to give prospective parents a feel for our ethos and excellence.”
