Hello, this week in UCAS and Careers news I want to look at apprenticeships. The world of work is constantly changing – and with the reality of increasing student debt apprenticeships are becoming more attractive.

In recent years the government has encouraged business to provide training apprenticeships to young people, and has made funding available. This has resulted in many apprenticeships being created including in areas such as law and  finance, not areas traditionally associated with apprenticeships. The new style apprenticeships are opening up new ways to join these and other professions.

I know that for some parents apprenticeships are an unknown quantity or can carry a negative connotation, but there is a new breed of apprenticeship out there which I wanted to introduce to you.

A good example of this new breed is BrightStart Apprenticeships. These are run by Deloitte who are a leading global provider of financial services; they are five year programmes offering the opportunity to ‘learn while you earn’ and study for degree level qualifications.

They offer apprenticeships in:

  • Audit & Assurance
  • Governance, risk and regulation
  • Tax Consulting, and
  • Technology
