Extra-curricular activities through our range of clubs enhance classroom learning and enable individual talent to flourish. They spark interest and encourage confidence.
Regular lunchtime and after school clubs are run by Junior School staff and enable pupils to relax and develop their interests.
The programme changes each term, but with clubs covering everything from art, chess and band to Minecraft and discovery, the variety means there is always something for everyone.
Homework club runs each day from 4 to 4.30pm. It is a useful time for boys to complete homework and ask questions. It finishes at 4.30pm as After-School Care starts, a useful service for working parents.
Music and drama
Music, speech and drama lessons are available to all in the Junior School.
Pupils are taught by qualified teachers who visit the School each week. Lesson fees are chargeable in addition to School fees. They are coordinated individually or in groups at times to suit each boys’ timetable.
Speech and Drama lessons are delivered by a LAMDA qualified teacher and work towards the LAMDA awards framework. With an excellent track record of success, these lessons build confidence as well as ability and are thoroughly enjoyed by all who take part.
Boys can also choose to learn to play any instrument in music lessons.
Talents and skills are regularly showcased through class assemblies, musical and dramatic performances, art exhibitions and the annual Junior School Performing Arts Evening.
All boys take part in Games, Physical Education and swimming lessons. Games lessons focus on our three school sports of rugby, hockey and cricket.
Physical Education, or PE, lessons develop physical and movement skills that help to build confidence and awareness of the benefits of healthy eating and an active lifestyle. Activities include gymnastics, short tennis, basketball, athletics, ball skills and striking and fielding.
Swimming develops the boys’ water confidence. It takes place throughout the school year. We follow the ASA learning to swim framework and all pupils have the opportunity to represent the school in the annual swimming gala each summer.
Those with a particular talent and interest in sport are encouraged to participate in inter-school and county competitions in the school sports of rugby, hockey and cricket.
Developing qualities such as teamwork and sportsmanship, sports fixtures allow boys to experience the thrill of competition and the pride of representing their School.
Whole School activities
Charities Week in the Autumn Term and Activities Week in the Summer Term are renowned for non-stop action, fun and games!
During Charities Week the whole school joins together to raise money through hare-brained schemes from the lucrative to the ludicrous – such as cake sales, penny trails, bouncy boxing and the ever-popular ‘gunge the teacher’.
Activities Week brings the Junior boys together for a week of excitement, trips and visits. Previous years’ trips have included the Harry Potter Studio tour, and a sleepover at Legoland Discovery Centre, Manchester.
