The French, German and Spanish syllabuses include study of the four skill areas (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) and seeks to provide a solid foundation for those wishing to study the subject at GCSE, A level or degree level. Languages are a popular option choice at both GCSE and A Level.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

  • French is studied throughout Years 7 to 9.
  • German is studied in Years 7 and 8, and is available as part of the options scheme in Year 9.
  • Spanish can be chosen as part of the options scheme in Year 9.

The syllabus for each language covers the basics of grammar, including the present, perfect and future tenses. Pupils learn to give information about their day to day life and talk about themselves and their family and friends. They also learn a body of core vocabulary which allows them to understand information given to them by another person.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

At GCSE we follow the AQA course for French, German and Spanish. The qualification is linear, which means that pupils sit their exams at the end of the course. Course content is based on three themes which are then applied to the language being studied:

  • Theme 1: Identity and culture
  • Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest
  • Theme 3: Current and future study and employment

The French, German and Spanish GCSEs all have a Foundation Tier (grades 1–5) and a Higher Tier (grades 4–9). Pupils must take all four question papers (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) at the same tier.

Additional support

Throughout Key Stages 3 and 4 pupils work in small groups and individually on a weekly basis with one of our Language Assistants to develop, practice and perfect their speaking skills. This takes place during lesson time.

Trips and visits

We visit France and Spain with our language pupils on alternate years. Read about the latest trip to Barcelona

We also run an annual German exchange with a school in Scharnebeck. Our pupils spend a week in Germany with a host family, taking part in cultural activities and trips, and the German pupils return to spend a week with us. Read about the 2018 exchange
