Each summer our Year 12 students have the opportunity to travel to Gedeli B School for two weeks to teach the pupils, work on improving the facilities and get involved in community projects.
We encourage each student taking part in the project to fundraise to cover the cost of their trip. Some of their more recent endeavours have included climbing mainland Spain’s highest mountain, a badminton tournament, a golfing marathon, and lots of walking – completing the West Highland Way, walking from Derby to York Minster and walking from Derby to the Tanzanian High Commission in London.
For the year before the trip, the Tanzania Team co-ordinate all project fund-raising efforts which enable us to take on development projects at Gedeli B school. ‘Charities Week’ takes place in school, and there are also events such as Jazz Night and Race Night. These involve the whole school, raising awareness and encouraging support from each and every one of our pupils and staff, their families and friends.
We regularly raise in excess of £10,000, and all of it is ploughed in to the project.
Organising the fundraising activities develops entrepreneurial, organisation and teamwork skills, and they begin realise that raising money takes a lot of effort and commitment.
Our list of projects for the 2019 project are currently being finalised and will be added here once available.
Support from Derby organisations
We are incredibly grateful to the organisations who help us with our fundraising, whether this is through direct donations or providing platforms to help us raise money.
