Sport is an integral part of school life here at Derby Grammar School. Our School sports are rugby, hockey and cricket. Most of our sport activity takes place at our dedicated sports venue, Rykneld Sports Centre.
In the Junior School boys enjoy Games, Physical Education (PE) and swimming lessons. Games lessons focus on our school sports whilst PE lessons include gymnastics, short tennis, basketball, athletics, ball skills and striking and fielding.
Junior boys have a swimming lesson once a week throughout the school year. We follow the ASA learning to swim framework and all pupils have the opportunity to represent the school in the annual swimming gala each summer.
In Senior School PE and Games lessons total over three hours per week in years 7 to 9. PE covers a variety of activities that develop fitness and an understanding of how the body works, as well as the specific core skills of the racquet sports and basketball.
Across Senior School, every year group has its own Games afternoon, with the School retaining the traditional Wednesday afternoon session to play competitive matches against other local schools at first team level.
At Sixth Form, the focus is on team sports. Boys can take part in the three school sports of rugby, hockey and cricket whilst girls can develop their individual and unit skills in both hockey and netball.
Sixth Formers can also enjoy table tennis, badminton and basketball or alternatively follow a more individual fitness programme, combining cardiovascular and resistance training, in our fitness suite at Rykneld Hall.
Lessons are led by trained specialists in our three major sports. Through these lessons, lunchtime activities and the house system, pupils also take part in a range of other sporting activities including athletics and cross country.
Representing Derby Grammar School
Pupils with particular ability and interest in rugby, hockey and cricket have the opportunity to represent the School playing inter-school fixtures or participating in tours such as the Sri Lankan Cricket Tour.
Rykneld Sports Centre
The acquisition of our own dedicated sports facility, Rykneld Sports Centre, enables our pupils to develop their skills in a wider range of sports.
Rykneld Sports Centre offers a large sports hall for badminton, tennis, basketball and indoor cricket coaching, a floodlit Astroturf pitch for hockey and three rugby pitches.
