Sport is an integral part of school life here at Derby Grammar School. Our School sports are rugby, hockey and cricket.
PE (physical education) and Games lessons total over three hours per week in years 7 to 9. PE covers a variety of activities that develop fitness and an understanding of how the body works, as well as the specific core skills of the racquet sports and basketball.
Every year group has its own Games afternoon, with the School retaining the traditional Wednesday afternoon session to play competitive matches against other local schools at first team level.
Lessons are led by trained PE specialists in our three major sports. Through these lessons, lunchtime activities and the house system, pupils also take part in a range of other sporting activities including swimming, athletics and cross country.
Representing Derby Grammar School
Pupils with particular ability and interest in rugby, hockey and cricket have the opportunity to represent the School playing inter-school fixtures or participating in tours such as the Sri Lankan Cricket Tour.
Rykneld Sports Centre
The recent acquisition of our own dedicated sports facility, Rykneld Sports Centre enables our pupils to develop their skills in a wider range of sports.
Rykneld Sports Centre offers a large sports hall for badminton, tennis, basketball and indoor cricket coaching, a floodlit Astroturf pitch for hockey and three rugby pitches.
