James Wroe finished Derby Grammar School in 2015 and is now studying a masters degree – MEng Aerospace Engineering – at the University of Sheffield. He spent his summer placement with Etihad Airways Engineering in Abu Dhabi.
“Derby Grammar School gave me the opportunity to visit lots of amazing places, for example Sri Lanka and Tanzania. I developed the confidence to speak in front of people and, more than anything probably, self-confidence academically. Mock interviews in Sixth Form gave me experience of what it feels like to be put under pressure.
A small but quite significant thing I gained during my time at the School is manners – dressing smartly, respect and politeness in general. It sounds small but things like that actually helped me a lot when I came to Abu Dhabi, because first impressions count!”
By far my favourite memory of Derby Grammar School was reaching, or probably crawling, to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on the Tanzania 2014 expedition.
