Full of energy and enthusiasm, there’s always something fun and exciting happening at Derby Grammar Primary School.
As an all boys’ environment, teaching is tailored specifically to the needs of boys from Reception to Year 6. We harness their natural inquisitiveness, engage their interests, stimulate their curiosity, build on their individual skills and foster a love of learning.
The Primary School is housed in its own custom-built area and is linked to the main school building. It is small and friendly, with class sizes of up to 20 in each year group.
Boys are happy, comfortable and confident in their learning environment and enjoy a wide range of activities and opportunities, both academic and in the wider curriculum. Inspirational teaching encourages imaginative thinkers who are eager for new challenges. And with the needs of each boy firmly in focus, all are valued and encouraged, wherever their talents lie.
Our pupils benefit from firm foundations in English, maths, science, PSHE and humanities whilst also enjoying regular lessons in art, music, sport, drama, design and technology – utilising the close relationship with the Senior School and making the most of the excellent facilities that this offers. Primary School pupils have the added advantage of a guaranteed place and a smooth transition to Senior School at Year 7.

Following this, you will be invited to join us in school for a family interview, and should COVID restrictions at your time of registration allow we also like to see the boys joining a lesson in school.
If you are joining into year 1 and above we also request a reference from their current school.

When do I need to apply for a place by?
We suggest that parents make contact with Derby Grammar a year prior to entry. So if you are considering September 2022 entry we suggest you make contact with us in September 2021.
We are however able to accept applications throughout the year, even through the Summer Holidays. So you need never feel it is too late, we are proud of our dedicated flexible admissions team who are contactable throughout the holidays and will try their best to meet your requirements.
What is the usual entry age? Do you accept pupils mid-year?
We tend to welcome pupils into Reception at age 4. We also have a natural entry point at the beginning of Key Stage 2 into Year 3.
We do accept pupils into other year groups, and also can consider mid-year entry. If you are considering a change part way through an academic year, we suggest that you consider starting with us after one of our natural breaks, whether that be Christmas, Easter, or one of our Half Term breaks. This provides the boys the best chance to settle as all the children return to school after a break.
Can I visit the school?
We would be delighted to welcome families to visit us.
Due to COVID restrictions our tours are now taking place post 4pm to ensure both visitors and pupils remain safe. We ask all visitors to wear face masks, and fill-in a COVID declaration form.
To book your tour, please contact Admissions: email@example.com
What are the fees for the Primary School?
Our fees are extremely good value for money when considering fees for other independent education.
Our Primary School fees start at £6916 for your first year in Reception.
All our fees include tuition fee, lunch and break-time snacks, and supervision from 8am and to 4.30pm at Homework Club.
To find more details about our fees please visit our Admissions page.
What's the process of progressing from the Primary School into the Senior School?
Our Primary School pupils don't sit exams to enter the Senior School at Derby Grammar. With small class sizes and specialist senior school teachers already having taught the boys, we are in an enviable position to already know the boys extremely well.
This means that the boys aren't required to take any further exams to enter the Senior School.
I'm a busy working parent, what before and after school support do you offer?
The school day starts at 8.30am but we offer a Breakfast Club, which allows boys to arrive on site from 7.30am for breakfast followed by activities. Should your child join us for Breakfast Club the fees will be added to your school bill.
The end of the school day rarely coincides with the end of the working day, so for parents who work or who are not able to collect boys at 3.50pm, After-School Care is provided on-site until 6pm.
With a range of supervised activities from crafts to games, boys can wind down after their busy school day in a safe environment with their friends until it’s time to go home.
Places can be booked for the whole week or for individual days, or just let us know on the day by phoning in to the School. We offer a flexible service to suit your requirements. There is an additional charge for After-School Care which is added to the termly invoice.

Do you accept pupils with SEN?
Derby Grammar Primary School is an academically selective school, however we know that academic ability and intelligence have very little correlation to SEN. Being aware of an SEN diagnosis means we are able to adapt our admissions and teaching processes to best allow your pupil to access our curriculum.
Should your child have an EHC plan or SEN diagnosis we ask that you let us know at the earliest possibility in the admissions process so we can ensure we are able to provide appropriate conditions for candidates. We will then access your child to ensure they are able to access our curriculum.
Once in school, our Primary School benefits from having a SENCo who works alongside our Senior School SENCo, Mrs Rai.
Do you offer a sibling discount in the Primary School?
Yes, our sibling discount applies to pupils in Derby Grammar Primary School as well as the Senior School and Sixth Form.
We offer a sibling discount of 10% on tuition fees to the youngest child where there are two siblings. Where three or more siblings attend the School, there is a 15% discount on the tuition fees for the youngest child.
Do you offer buses?
Yes, we have a wide range of bus routes running to collect pupils. To see our bus routes please visit the Admissions page.
