We support and encourage our pupils to develop their talents in music and performance throughout their time with us, regularly attending concerts and participating in workshops led by specialists such as Glyndebourne Opera.
Our close relationship with Derby High School enables boys and girls to form joint ensembles. Concerts are regularly performed in Derby Cathedral and there are several choral scholars at the School.
We have a close association with Hot House Music which rehearses here on-site at Derby Grammar School. Many of our pupils are Hot House band members.
Singing is an important part of musical life at Derby Grammar School. The Junior School is involved in the national Sing Up scheme and the Senior School actively encourages singing.
We have a Junior and Senior School Choir. Junior Choir takes part in a variety of concerts throughout the year, culminating in competing in the Derby Arts Festival in the summer term. The Senior Choir rehearse in four parts (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and performs a wide range of music including pop, jazz, classical and world styles. Concerts are given both in and out of School, including performances at Derby Cathedral.
The Joint Choral Society consists of around 100 singers made up of pupils, parents and staff from both the Grammar School and Derby High School. Well known choral works such as Faure’s Requiem and Rutter’s Gloria are rehearsed over half a term and performed usually in Derby Cathedral, alongside a professional orchestra and soloists.
Our most advanced singers enjoy the challenge of close harmony in our Barbershop Choir, whose repertoire includes arrangements of popular classics from the ‘50s to the present day. This choir has performed at many concerts since it was formed two years ago and won their category with distinction at the Derby Arts Festival in 2017.
A variety of instrumental ensembles are available to enable all levels of musical ability to be included in extra-curricular music making at the School.
Junior Band is open to any instrument at any level and takes part in a variety of concerts throughout the year.
Senior Band rehearses weekly and takes part in a range of concerts both in and out of School. It is open to any instrument of any level.
The Swing Band is open to players of Grade 4 and above. As well as taking part in our regular concerts, the Swing Band is often booked for weddings and parties and recently took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth and the National Eisteddfod of Wales. They have also recorded two CD’s.
Pupils are encouraged to form their own ensembles and can book rehearsal time and space in the music department at lunchtimes or after School. Past ensembles have included a successful jazz quartet and pop band.
