Music

Music is a popular aspect of co-curricular school life, and we offer a wide variety of activities for all key stages and for all abilities and styles including:

  • Primary School Band
  • Primary School Choir
  • Jazz Band
  • Swing Band
  • Senior School Choir
  • Barbershop Choir
  • String Group
  • Guitar Group

Involvement within these ensembles helps pupils to develop a range of musical skills such as sight-reading, projection and aural ability, as well as transferable skills such as communication, teamwork and discipline.

Throughout the academic year, we host live concerts and performances where pupils can showcase their talents to a teacher and parent audience.

We have a close affiliation with Hot House Music; an award-winning music school providing unparalleled opportunities for budding musicians in the East Midlands. Many of our pupils are Hot House band members and often use our facilities to rehearse and our 300-seat capacity hall to perform.

We also have strong links with Derby High School, Derby Music Service and Guernsey Grammar School. We regularly collaborate with these institutions for concerts, tuition and musical experiences.

Derby Grammar School creates incredible opportunities for pupils to achieve their full potential. In addition to our broad range of co-curricular activities, private lessons are available (surcharges apply) which help pupils reach that next level. Instrumental tuition is available for guitar, piano, keyboard, woodwind, strings, brass, drums and vocals.
