At Derby Grammar School we believe it’s important to acknowledge those pupils who excel in academia, sports or music and award accordingly. We offer scholarships of up to 15% to pupils aged 11 and above.
They are awarded by the Governors and recognise ability, excellence and outstanding talent. A scholarship normally remains with the recipient throughout their time in School.
Pupils awarded with a scholarship will be an ambassador for the School, leading by example and maintaining excellence in his or her chosen field and academia. In return, we mentor our scholars and provide opportunities to develop and improve in their chosen field.
Academic Scholarships are awarded each year, based on the result of the entrance examinations held in January.
Sports Scholarships are awarded each year, based on assessment of sporting ability and potential, as well as a satisfactory level of attainment in the entrance exam. For Sixth Form Sports Scholarship, applicants should be competing at county level.
A reference is required from a coach in at least one of the School’s major team games: rugby, hockey or cricket as part of a scholarship application. Sports scholarship trials are held on the same day as the entrance examinations.
Sports scholarships can be awarded at any point in school life and there is an expectation that the recipient will commit to contributing to sport at Derby Grammar School.
Music Scholarships are awarded each year. A Music Scholarship offer is based on assessment of musical ability and potential, as well as a satisfactory level of attainment in the entrance exam.
Applicants should be capable musicians who have achieved at least Grade 4 in their first instrument for Year 7 entry. For Sixth Form Music Scholarships applicants should be at Grade 8 (or equivalent) in one instrument or voice and be intending to study Music at A Level. Music Scholarship auditions are held after the Senior School entrance examinations or Sixth Form interview.
Music scholarships can be awarded at any point in school life and those awarded a Music Scholarship will be expected to take part in the musical life of the School.
Choral Scholarships are available to boys and girls who are Choristers at Derby Cathedral.
Please contact the Director of Music, Hugh Morris, at the Cathedral for details.
